FOR the first half of 2009 I lived out a fantasy - I played Broadway! Or, as the local showbiz scribblers define it, blending the mercantile and the rhapsodic, The Great White Way, The Rialto, Gotham, the Main Stem. The wayward artery that pumps with a singular angularity through the grid of the Manhattan streetscape, crossing naughty, bawdy, gaudy, sporty 42nd Street on its northward flow.

This legendary thoroughfare has always proclaimed its own rhythm, through that great American invention ''the Broadway lyric'', an art form expressing every human yearning or dilemma, in vaudeville and minstrel shows and in golden decades of sentimentality, charm, razzmatazz, abrasiveness and wit.
