Old scam in new clothes targets smartphones
From high-end consumer devices to enterprise mobility platforms, experts have warned that smartphones can be vulnerable to a new twist on a rip-off as old as the internet. Trojan dialers can run up absurd cell phone bills and trash mobile cost optimization for any enterprise systems they infect. In their original form, the Trojan dialers generally took the form of video content or programs found on pornographic websites. When downloaded, the dialers would mute the infected computer’s modem speaker, hang up the current connection, and begin to make calls to phone numbers that charged sky-high rates. The latest iteration of the classic "porn dialer," experts say, has a number of new tricks up its sleeve to help maximize the amount of money stolen from victims. Mass text messages urging users to call a high-rate number will feature a recording meant to keep victims on the line – and running up the bill – for as long as possible. |
